The European Central Bank (ECB) will launch a prototype of the digital euro in 2023 after a two-year exploration phase. Thus, the Frankfurt institution shows its intention to act quickly to respond to the growing dematerialization of payments and the spread of cryptocurrencies.
The digital euro can be used to transfer or pay for purchases online via a smartphone app or with payment cards similar to debit cards.
To be successful, the digital euro must be attractive to consumers, offering a cheaper, more efficient and widely available method of payment.
